According to the sources, on an average, around 40-50 lakhs eggs are sold every day in the retail market in the state. However, during Saavan and other festivals, the consumption has dropped by around 50%. The fall in demand has led the poultry owners to send their produce outside the state. The wholesalers believe that the consumption will stay like this till the first week of September, but will increase later. Then will again drop during Navratri festival. The fall in consumption has led to decrease in the prices of the wholesale market. On the other hand, the prices in retail market have remained unchanged and constant at Rs 5 per egg. According to the NECC, the Association of Poultry Owners, the price of egg was Rs 330 for 100 pieces on Wednesday. The average price for 100 eggs in June was Rs 338 which reduced to Rs 328 in July and in the first 20 days, the average price was around Rs 311. Prakash Patel, a poultry farm owner in Kheda, said that usually 40-50 lakh pieces are consumed daily. But there is a drop in the urban and rural areas by around 40% during festivals. Md.Salim, a wholesaler in theWalledCity, said that the consumption had decreased by almost 50% and the prices had also come down from Rs 54 a dozen to Rs 48 a dozen. He said that usually he used to sell over 10,000 pieces in a day, but currently he could only sell around 5,000-odd pieces. He said that the sale would likely increase in the first week of September and during the winter the sale would be at it’s top.
